My longest run to date wasn’t the best route to pick but it was mostly successful. My knees are definitely sore and will require ice. I’ll probably end up taking a fair amount of ibuprofen today and tomorrow. But, I did it and it is on to 20 miles next weekend. Two hours is a long time to be running. I’m going to need a trip to Amoeba to stock up on new music before next Sunday.
I did pack wisely this time with a water bottle full of Gatorade and a GU chocolate packet. The GU tastes like Jell-o pudding. I was hearing Bill Cosby’s voice in my head, “Tastes like pudding”, or whatever his tag line was, as I wearily made my way back down to Crissy Field. The only problem was my choice of route. I started from the marina, across Crissy Field and through Seacliff to Land’s End.
I may have passed by Robin Williams in Seacliff or at least someone who looked remarkable like him running through his neighborhood. He was wearing a nike hat, sunglasses, and a long sleeve, white running shirt so it was difficult to ascertain any distinguishing features. However, he has a very distinctive face and mouth in particular. He seemed to be suffering a bit but, not too badly.
Anyway, Land’s End terminates in a deep descent past the Cliff House and down along Ocean Beach onto the Great Highway. I went through a tiny bit of the park and then back up into the Sutro District. A patch here and there were unpleasant bits of path with serious intrusion by brush or a tiny shoulder of the road to work with. But, per usual around here most the of the scenery is breathtaking. It was a clear day so from Land’s End I could see into the North Bay were I was racing last Sunday.
I was trudging along from miles 12 to 16 but, the GU packet did keep me from bonking. If not for the hills I think I could have gone a bit farther. I spent most of the time worrying about whether or not the “Yacht permit parking only” applied on Sundays or not. It would have been demoralizing to come back to find my car towed. I also wondered if perhaps I should have participated in this morning’s Bridge to Bridge run instead of trekking out on my own. But, in the end it is some miles down and many more miles to go.
