5.13 miles, 34:48

This was actually 8.26 km or, 5×1200m plus some extended jogging between repetitions. That all went fairly well. Unfortunately, later in the day I decided to ride my bike to the book store down town. As I was coming up Illinois Street a double-parked car decided to start backing up towards me. I swerved around him and my front tire caught the train tracks that run along the street throwing me to the ground. My left side looks like silly putty. Lots of lovely yellow and purple bruises and plenty of road rash. My rotten luck.

There are several irritating factors to this crash. First, what was that guy thinking backing up into oncoming traffic? He wanted a parking space on a street with plenty of parking spaces. Secondly, why does the city of San Francisco leave dormant train rails around? Not a terribly bike friendly practice this. The rails won’t be used by the new light rail from what I can tell and I haven’t seen a freight train rolling up into San Francisco lately (they tend to use the CalTrain tracks a few blocks away). I should have just stopped and flown up onto his hood. That would have scared him and done more damage to this car than me. There is always next time. Finally, it had to be my left side where I already have a knee in disrepair. Great.

I’ll be taking a few days off allowing all that to heal so that I can walk, never mind run, without pain. I’m going to try to get back to running on Sunday. Beware: bikes are train tracks don’t mix!
