On top of Mt. Tam

I ventured a little farther north than usual to Mt. Tamalpais near Muir Woods. I stopped periodically to snap a few pictures. There were only fleeting glimpses of the Pacific and the houses of Sausalito as the fog was rolling in fast and thick. Typical Bay area chilly summer weather. No bother though, it was well worth it.

I’ve been trying to branch out to more remote locations based on the information in a trail running book my folks bought for me. Unfortunately, I tend to get lost easily right from the start. This time it didn’t seem like the trail really started past the stables but, in fact it does. After I did a shorter 5 mile loop and a steep climb, I came back around and found where the book had told me to start. Later when I was able to check the elevation it turned out that there were two 1,000 foot climbs in there. Ouch. Check out the link to the map below. Note the alternate (i.e. incorrect) spelling of Sausalito on the USGS map. Nice work Gov.

Where there are climbs there are descents. I took a goofy video of the start of a plummeting path. It doesn’t translate so well. Sorta like: “Look! I have feet!” Please do listen with the sound off so you don’t have to hear me wheezing along. I did take a better clip earlier that shows the fog rolling over the mountain. Downright serene.

Speaking of feet, I’ve been meaning to post my gear list since I was asked about the GPS unit I use (the Garmin Forerunner 201). Therefore the question of today is:

“Do you have one pair of trail shoes and another pair for the road running or do you use the same pair?”

I wear the same North Face Vapor Lights on the trail and the street. I decided to go with one pair because I thought my feet were suffering from switching back and forth. In retrospect I think my feet were suffering from hitting rocks on speedy descents but, I have not regretted the decision to go with one pair of sneakers (funny how sneakers isn’t a popular term anymore). Anyway, what’s your story? I’m curious to hear if folks alternate or not.

I use trail runners (Brooks Trail Addiction) on trail (because they’re sturdy enough to protect me from feeling the rocks too much) and use road shoes (Brooks Addiction) on the road because the trail shoes are too heavy for every day use and I feel they slow me down. I’m not that big of a person so a small weight difference actually does make a difference for me.
